State of the Art Search

Save on research and development costs and find out what is being patented in your field.

  • Have you encountered a problem during development and need to know how others have solved it? Are you looking for inspiration? Would you like to know what is being patented by your competitors or what patents exist in your field?
  • Then a State of the Art Search is a useful tool that will help you find the right direction and save R&D costs.

When is the best time to perform the search?

  • You need to solve a particular technical problem
  • You are starting development and want to build on the current best practice
  • You want to save costs on your own research and development
  • You are looking for new partners to work with
  • You want an overview of competitors’ patents and patents in your field to make informed decisions about the future direction of your development

What is the outcome of the search?

With a State of the Art Search, it depends on what your needs are – we can adapt it to suit them.
The outcome can be an overview of:

  • the closest similar solutions
  • the existing solutions in your field
  • the patent portfolios of your competitors
  • relevant documents in both patent and non-patent literature (including references to the original version, machine translation, filing date, owner details, active territories, etc.)

In addition, you will also always receive a record of the search strategy employed.

How much does the search cost?

In some rapidly developing technical fields there may be more patent documents than in the others fields, which means that more time is required for the search.

The costs of the search depend on:

  • the amount of documents that are found during the search
  • the desired outcome that you expect from the State of the Art Search.

What will we need from you?

It depends on what you expect from the search. According to that we define the required documents, which can be:

  • description of your product or the problem you need to solve
  • technical field which you want an overview for
  • list of competitors whose patent portfolios we are to analyse

The input information also varies depending on what you need from the search.

Our work together will involve the following steps:

01

Meeting in person/online

for an initial specialist consultation

02

Filling out a questionnaire

with details about your technical solution

03

Agreement on a time allocation for the search

04

Initiating the search of technical databases, registers, and other relevant materials

If at any time during the search we discover a document that would represent a major turning point in the further process, we will immediately inform you and we will not continue with the search.

  • Searches can only be performed based on the already published documents. The publication typically takes place within 18 months after the application filing date. Therefore, no search provides 100% certainty. However, we make our best to get as close to it as possible within the agreed time allowance.
